Before assuming the duties of his office, the chief of police shall take and subscribe to the oath of office and shall enter into a bond payable to the city with two (2) or more good and sufficient sureties, to be approved by the city council, in the amount prescribed by the city council, conditioned on the faithful performance of his duties as chief of police and payment over to the city treasurer of all monies belonging to the city and to the several officers their costs and fees that may come into his hands.
