At each intersection described in this chapter where a stop sign shall be placed, said stop sign shall have the letters “STOP” and shall be facing in the direction of the traffic which is to stop in front of said sign. The aforementioned stop sign shall be of a size and of configuration which meets the specifications for said sign set forth by the state transportation commission.

Each person who drives a vehicle (except when directed to proceed otherwise by a police officer), who approaches an intersection controlled by a stop sign erected pursuant to this chapter, shall come to a complete stop before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection or, in the event there is no crosswalk, shall stop at a clearly marked stop line, but if none, then at the point nearest the intersecting roadway where the driver has a view of approaching traffic on the intersecting roadway, before entering the intersection.
