Stop signs as are authorized in writing by the public works director shall be erected and maintained by the town.

Except when directed to proceed by a police officer, every driver of a motor vehicle approaching a stop intersection indicated by a stop sign shall stop before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection or, in the event there is no crosswalk, shall stop at a clearly marked stop line, but, if none, then at the point nearest the intersecting roadway where the driver has a view of approaching traffic on the intersecting roadway before entering the intersection.

Every said sign shall conform to the manual and specifications for uniform traffic-control devices as adopted by the state department of transportation. Every stop or yield sign shall be located as near as practicable at the nearest line of the crosswalk thereat, or, if none, at the nearest line of the roadway.
