The city engineer is hereby authorized and instructed to install a system of house numbers for buildings in this city.

For the purpose of this chapter, streets running approximately parallel to the beach line of the Pacific Ocean shall be considered as running north and south, and streets extending approximately at right angles to the beach line of the Pacific Ocean shall be considered as running east and west.

Broadway is hereby determined to be the base line for house numbering; and house numbers on all streets running northerly and southerly therefrom shall commence with the numbers one hundred one and one hundred two at the base line and continue northerly and southerly respectively, to the terminal of such streets or city limits allowing as near as practicable one hundred numbers to the block.

Coast Boulevard is hereby determined to be the meridian line for house numbering; and house numbers on intersecting streets between the meridian line and the Pacific Ocean shall commence with the numbers one hundred one and one hundred two at the Pacific Ocean and number two hundred at the meridian line.

House numbers on intersecting streets easterly of the meridian line shall commence with numbers two hundred one and two hundred two at the meridian line and continue easterly to the terminal of such streets or the city limits, allowing as near as practicable one hundred numbers to the block.

Odd numbers shall be used on the southerly and westerly sides and even numbers on the northerly and easterly sides of all streets, respectively.
Where necessary, fractional numbers may be used.

Where numbers are required for rear designations, the house number in front thereof may be used with letter suffixes.

All streets not intersecting a base or meridian line shall be numbered in accordance with the numbering of streets parallel thereto.

The city engineer shall notify the owner or person in control of every building in this city of the number or numbers designated for the principal entrance or entrances thereto; and the owner or person in control of such building shall, within sixty days after such notice, place, or cause to be placed, the number or numbers so designated, in Arabic digits each of which shall be not less than three inches in height, upon the doorhead, doorjamb, porch post, front steps or other place near said entrance or entrances to such building in plain view from the highway in front thereof.
