A. 
The following words and phrases, when used in this title, shall, for the purpose of this title, have the meanings respectively ascribed to them in this chapter.
B. 
Whenever any words and phrases used in this title are not defined in this chapter but are defined in the Vehicle Code, and amendments thereto, such definitions shall apply.

The term "coach" means any motor bus, motor coach, trackless trolley, or passenger car used as a common carrier of passengers.

The term "curb" means the lateral boundary of the roadway, whether such curb is marked by curbing construction, or not so marked; the term "curb," as used in this title, shall not include the line dividing the roadway of a street from parking strips in the center of a street, nor from tracks or rights-of-way of public utility companies.

The term "divisional island" means a raised island located in the roadway and separating opposing or conflicting streams of traffic.

The term "gross weight" means the weight of a vehicle without load, plus the weight of any load thereon.

Within the meaning of this chapter, "holidays" are January 1, known as New Year's Day; the third Monday in February, known as Washington's Birthday; the last Monday in May, known as Memorial Day; July 4, known as Independence Day; the first Monday in September, known as Labor Day; November 11, known as Veterans Day; the last Thursday in November, known as Thanksgiving Day; and December 25, known as Christmas Day. In the event New Year's Day, Independence Day and Christmas Day falls on Sunday, the following day will be taken in lieu of the holiday, and if they fall on Saturday, the Friday preceding will be deemed a holiday.

The term "loading zone" means the space reserved for the exclusive use of vehicles during the loading or unloading of passengers or freight.

Whenever certain hours are named in this title, they shall mean standard time or daylight-saving time as may be in current use in this city.

The term "ordinance" means the ordinance, rule or regulation adopted by the city council relating to the movement of traffic and enforcement thereof.

The term "parkway" means that portion of street right-of-way other than a roadway or sidewalk.

The term "passenger loading zone" means the space reserved for the exclusive use of vehicles while receiving or discharging passengers.

The term "police officer" means every officer of the police department of this city or any officer authorized to direct or regulate traffic or to make arrests for violations of traffic regulations.

The term "pushcart" means a vehicle propelled by a person, but not ridden upon.

The term "traffic enforcement division" means the division within the police department of this city.

The term "traffic engineering division" means the division within the engineering department of this city.

The term "Vehicle Code" means the California Vehicle Code.
