The purpose of this chapter is to provide for the care, restitution, sale, or destruction of unclaimed property in the possession of the city police department.

Unclaimed property, including unclaimed bicycles, shall be held by the police department for a period of at least three months.

Thereafter, such property shall be sold at public auction to the highest bidder and the proceeds therefrom shall be deposited in the city general fund.
Notice of such sale shall be given by the police department at least five days before the time fixed therefor by publication once in a newspaper of general circulation published in the county.
The receipt for the sale price signed by the police department shall be a valid title to the purchaser of property so sold.

Upon demand prior to sale, accompanied by such proof of ownership as the police department may require, the police department shall restore such property to the owner.

Property remaining unsold in the possession of the police department after being offered at public auction may be destroyed or otherwise disposed of by the police department.
