A single district court district is established within the County, the boundaries of which coincide with the boundaries of the County and which is designated "San Juan County district court."

One district court judge shall be elected, at the times and in the manner of electing nonpartisan public officials, whose office will be part-time and whose term shall be as provided by law.

The salary of the district court judge shall be established by resolution of the County council within the salary range permitted by state law. District court judges shall receive reasonable traveling expenses when engaged in the business of the court.

The district court judge may appoint a court clerk, judge pro tempore and court commissioners, in conjunction with the County council, who shall annually set salaries and provide for expenses for those appointees, all of whom shall meet the requirements set by law.

There is one district courtroom at the County courthouse in Friday Harbor, and the district court judge shall set the time for regular court days and may set and hear cases at any other time.

The district court judge, judge pro tempore, court commissioner, clerk of district court and each court employee shall be bonded as provided by law, and in amounts set and approved by the County council.

The plan of the County district court shall be reviewed annually by the district court districting committee, which, in accordance with RCW 3.38.010, shall be composed of a judge of the superior court, the prosecuting attorney or a deputy prosecuting attorney, a practicing attorney of the the County selected by the president of the local bar association, the serving district court judge, the chair of the County council, the mayors or mayors' representatives of each city or town in the County, and the County auditor, both as to terms and conditions of any agreement, and the amounts of annual payments and distribution of fines.
