The maximum lawful speed limit, established by RCW 46.61.400, may be altered after approval by the County council when based on engineering and traffic investigation, and becomes effective when posted by the County engineer as provided in RCW 46.61.415.

Whenever the condition of any road, or work in the construction, repair or maintenance thereof, may be under way, the County road engineer may erect signs at the termini of such portion of said road indicating a lesser speed limit than provided in this chapter, and, while such work is being done, and said signs are so posted, the lesser speed limit so declared shall be the maximum speed limit allowed on said portion of said road.

A. 
A series of maps which shall be known as the "Official County Road Speed Limit Maps" (the "official maps") shall show and establish the maximum lawful speed limits for all County roads as determined and declared by the County council.
B. 
The official maps shall be adopted and may be amended by the County council. Each official map shall be signed by the County council and include the adopting ordinance number.
C. 
There shall be only one official copy of the official maps, which shall reside in the custody of the County engineer. Whenever any portion of the official maps is amended, the official copy shall be promptly altered to reflect the amendment.
D. 
The County engineer shall administer the official maps and shall have authority to resolve questions regarding the precise boundaries of any adopted speed limit.

Any person violating any of the provisions of this chapter shall, upon conviction thereof, be guilty of a traffic infraction.
