Town council members and the mayor may opt to receive either a salary or health insurance benefits during their term in office. The salary for town council members shall be equal in value to seventy-five percent of an individual town employee’s health insurance premium. If a town council member is eligible for a town health insurance premium that is lower than the rate established for individual town employees, then that council member shall also receive a salary equal to the difference between their reduced town premium and the salary received by town council members who do not opt to receive health insurance benefits from the town.

During their term in office, town council members and the mayor may opt to receive the same health insurance benefits provided to individual town employees in lieu of the salary authorized in Section 2.20.020. If different health insurance benefits or plans exist for different town employees, the town council shall by resolution determine which health insurance benefits or plan applies to its members and the mayor.

Town council members are encouraged to attend at least one of the following training sessions every year: (A) the Montana League of Cities and Towns Conference; or (B) the Montana State University Local Government Center’s Municipal Institute.
