GENERAL REFERENCES

Every person riding a bicycle, tricycle or similar vehicle on the public highways, streets, avenues, walks, parks or public places within said Town of Southold is hereby required to have attached thereto or carried therewith a light of such illuminating power as to be plainly seen 200 feet ahead and kept lighted between 1/2 hour after sunset and 1/2 hour before sunrise; but this section shall not apply to any rider whose light has become extinguished or who is necessarily absent from his home without a light, when going at a pace not exceeding six miles an hour and when an audible signal is given, as provided in § 88-2 of this chapter, as often as 30 feet are passed over.
Every person riding a bicycle, tricycle or similar vehicle on the public highways, streets, avenues, walks, parks or public places within said Town of Southold is hereby required to give an alarm by bell, whistle or otherwise, which may be heard 100 feet distant, when about to meet or pass pedestrians and when about to meet or pass other vehicles.
Every person riding a bicycle, tricycle or similar vehicle on the public highways, streets, avenues, walks, parks or public places within said Town of Southold in hereby required to ride the same in a careful and prudent manner and at a rate of speed so as not to endanger the property of another or the life or limb of any person, provided that a rate of speed in excess of 30 miles an hour for a distance of 1/4 of a mile, shall be presumptive evidence of riding at a rate of speed which is not careful and prudent.
No cutout shall be used by any person riding a motorcycle or other similar vehicle on any public highway, street, avenue, walk, park or public place within said Town of Southold.
No person riding a bicycle, tricycle or similar vehicle on the public highways, streets, avenues, walks, parks or public places within said Town of Southold shall coast or proceed by inertia or momentum with the feet off the pedals nor carry any child under five years of age upon such vehicle.
No person shall ride any bicycle, tricycle or similar vehicle on any sidewalk in the thickly settled parts of said Town of Southold at any time when the said sidewalk is occupied by pedestrians.

Any person committing an offense against any provision of this chapter shall, upon conviction thereof, be guilty of a violation punishable by a fine not exceeding $250 or by imprisonment for a term not exceeding 15 days, or by both such fine and imprisonment. The continuation of an offense against the provisions of this chapter shall constitute, for each day the offense is continued, a separate and distinct offense hereunder.
This chapter does not apply to and is not effective within the Incorporated Village of Greenport, but does apply to and affect all other parts of the Town of Southold.
