A Sergeant shall be responsible for the enforcement of all laws and
ordinances, Department rules and regulations, orders, procedures, discipline,
punctuality and attendance, appearance, good order and efficiency of members
within his assigned jurisdiction.
A.Â
A Sergeant shall:
(1)Â
Perform such specific duties and functions as assigned
by his superior officers.
(2)Â
Obey all lawful orders.
(3)Â
Perform assigned tasks.
(4)Â
Provide leadership and guidance in developing loyalty
and dedication to the police profession.
(5)Â
Train, direct, supervise and evaluate members in their
assigned duties. Recommend remedial or disciplinary action for inefficient,
incompetent or unsuitable conduct and/or behavior of the members.
(6)Â
Communicate orders, information and instructions.
(7)Â
Inform his relief of all necessary police matters.
(8)Â
At intervals, inspect personnel, vehicles and equipment.
(9)Â
Report to his superior officer absentees and any deficiencies
in men and equipment.
(10)Â
Ensure that department resources are used effectively.
(11)Â
Ensure that recovered property is handled in accordance
with department procedures.
(12)Â
Account for all moneys and valuables received, processed
and disbursed in conformance with department procedures.
(13)Â
Inquire into the circumstances of all arrests to assure
that all persons are handled in conformance with department procedures (e.g.,
prisoner activity log.)
(14)Â
Know and conform to the current bail provisions of the
Criminal Procedure Law, State of New York.
(15)Â
Report promptly matters of police importance to his immediate
superior.
(16)Â
Ensure that all appropriate Town, county and state departments
are informed of emergencies which require their attention.
(17)Â
Visit all patrolmen of the force on duty in the territory
subject to his supervision. He shall inquire as to the conditions of the member's
post.
(18)Â
Check all reports at least once each tour of duty and
verify that a full and accurate record of duty performed, field reports and
all other necessary information has been entered on the appropriate form.
The Sergeant shall verify the same entering date, time and signature.
(19)Â
Inspect departmental vehicles and equipment assigned
to patrolmen each tour of duty for serviceability and cleanliness.
(20)Â
Direct activities of subordinate members for the purpose
of achieving the objectives of the Police Department.
(21)Â
Perform those duties of the members of the force that
are applicable to him.
(22)Â
When in uniform, maintain a professional bearing and
render professional courtesy to ranking officers.
B.Â
The Sergeant shall inspect all sectors during his tour
of duty.
