The purpose of this article is to implement
the Charter revision of December 1989, to set forth the manner in
which the First Selectman and the Selectmen shall be elected.
The Board of Selectmen is comprised of one First
Selectman and two Selectmen.
The office of First Selectman is distinct from
the office of Selectman. No person may run for the office of First
Selectman and that of Selectman in the same election.
Each party may nominate one person for the office
of First Selectman and two persons for the office of Selectman.
Electors may vote for the full number to be
elected, one person for the office of First Selectman and two persons
for the office of Selectman.
Due to the rule of minority representation,
§ 9-167a of the Connecticut General Statutes, no more than
two members of the Board of Selectmen may be members of the same political
party. In the event that members of the same party receive the higher
number of votes for both First Selectman and two Selectman positions,
one Selectman position will be filled by the highest vote getter who
is not a member of the majority party.
Votes cast for the office of First Selectman
will not be counted toward election to the office of Selectman.
