Where required, sprinkler systems must follow standards in NFPA 13, NFPA 13D, NFPA 13R as adopted and amended by the Maine State Fire Marshal's Office and building codes as adopted and amended in Maine Uniform Building and Energy Code, (MUBEC). One- and two-family dwellings are exempt from requiring sprinkler systems by the Maine Department of Public Safety, Bureau of Building Codes and Standards. A. 
Occupied or unoccupied buildings or portions thereof of any construction shall maintain all sprinklers and standpipe systems and all component parts in workable condition at all times, and it shall be unlawful for any owner or occupant to reduce the effectiveness of the protection these systems provide, except that this shall not prohibit the owner or occupant from temporarily reducing or discontinuing the protection where necessary to make tests, repairs, alterations or additions.
B. 
The Chief of the Fire Department shall be notified before such tests, repairs, alterations or additions are started unless the work is to be continuous until completed.
C. 
The Chief of the Fire Department or his designee shall determine the adequacy of life safety from fire in accordance with the provisions of this article.[1]
