The County shall constitute a single school division.
The School Board of the County shall consist of five members to be elected by the qualified voters of the County in accordance with the provisions of this article and Title 22.1 of the Code of Virginia, 1950, as amended.
The School Board shall be a continuing body. No measure pending before it shall abate or be discontinued solely because of the expiration of the term of office of, or the removal from office of, one or more members of the Board.
The terms of the appointed School Board members representing Election District 2 and Election District 3 shall terminate on December 31, 2001.
The School Board Selection Commission is abolished on December 31, 2001.
The term of the appointed members of the School Board serving Election Districts 1, 4 and 5 shall be continued until December 31, 2003.
A. 
The election of School Board members representing Northumberland County School Board Election Districts 2 and 3 shall be held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November beginning in 2001 and every fourth year thereafter.
B. 
The election of School Board members representing Northumberland School Board Election Districts 1, 4 and 5 shall be held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November beginning in 2003 and every fourth year thereafter.
C. 
Five members of the School Board shall be elected, in accordance with Subsection D, by the qualified voters residing in the School Board Election Districts. To be eligible to be a candidate for election from a School Board Election District, an individual must be a resident of the district.
D. 
The County shall be divided into five School Board Election Districts, District 1, District 2, District 3, District 4, and District 5. One School Board member shall be elected from and shall represent each such district. The five School Board Election Districts shall be composed of the corresponding Northumberland County Election District located within the County, the boundaries of which are described in Chapter 9 of the Code of Ordinances of Northumberland County, Virginia, 1998, as amended.
(1) 
The boundaries of School Board Election District 1 shall be coterminous with the boundaries of Election District 1.
(2) 
The boundaries of School Board Election District 2 shall be coterminous with the boundaries of Election District 2.
(3) 
The boundaries of School Board Election District 3 shall be coterminous with the boundaries of Election District 3.
(4) 
The boundaries of School Board Election District 4 shall be coterminous with the boundaries of Election District 4.
(5) 
The boundaries of School Board Election District 5 shall be coterminous with the boundaries of Election District 5.
Each member of the School Board shall serve for a term of four years commencing on January 1 following the member's election or until a successor shall have been elected and taken office. Vacancy in the office of School Board member shall be filled pursuant to §§ 24.2-226 and 24.2-227, Code of Virginia, as amended.
