The Town Council shall appoint, annually, some
person to be Dog Warden of the Town. Such appointment shall be reported
to the State Commissioner of Agriculture not later than March 20 of
the next succeeding year. Such appointment shall commence as of April
first of each year.
The Office of Dog Warden shall come under the
jurisdiction of the Police Department of the Town. The Chief of Police
shall supervise the conduct of the Dog Warden and Deputy Dog Warden.
The Dog Warden shall be responsible for the
removal of all dead dogs from state and local highways.
The Dog Warden shall establish a procedure for
treatment of injured or sick dogs in his care, under the direction
of a licensed veterinarian, who shall determine whether such injured
or sick dog shall be destroyed.
The Dog Warden shall receive as compensation
an annual sum equal to a patrolman's level, based on the Griffenhagen
scale, but he shall be eligible for any fringe benefits available
to other employees of the Town.
It shall be the duty of the Dog Warden, in addition
to those duties enumerated in the General Statutes of the state, to
maintain a card index listing all dogs in the Town, a separate file
on each dog involved in biting either persons or other animals, daily
records of telephone calls and complaints and a file on the disposition
of each complaint.
The Dog Warden shall be responsible for the
operation of the dog pound and the enforcement of all laws relating
to dogs. The Dog Warden's duties shall not include domestic or household
pets other than dogs.
The Town Council shall appoint, annually, some
person to be Deputy Dog Warden for the Town for the term of one year
from the first day of April, the appointment to be made not later
than March 20th in each year. The Deputy Dog Warden shall be under
the direct supervision of the Dog Warden and Chief of Police in all
the prescribed duties of that office. In the event that the Dog Warden
is unable for any reason to perform his duties, it shall be the duty
of the Deputy Dog Warden to perform the same. The Town Council shall
set the salary of the Deputy Dog Warden.

All applicants for the position of Dog Warden
or Deputy Dog Warden shall be examined by the Mayor, Chief of Police
and a representative of the Department of Agriculture of the state.
The two top qualifying candidates' names shall be submitted to the
Town Council for appointment to each position, and the Town Council
shall select one of two for each office.
The Dog Warden shall annually submit a budget
for approval by the Town Council at the same time as all other Town
departments.
