The Department of Public Safety will include
those divisions of Township government and those functions assigned
to the department by the Township Committee in accordance with this
chapter.
There shall be a Police Department, the head
of which shall be the Police Chief, provided that, in the absence
of a Police Chief, an individual will be appointed to act in his place.
The Police shall be responsible for:
A. Preserving the public peace; protecting life and property;
preventing crime; protecting and arresting offenders against federal
and state statutes and Township ordinances; disbursing any unlawful
or dangerous assemblage; and preserving order at all elections, public
meetings and public affairs.
B. Administering and enforcing all traffic laws on streets
and highways within the Township.
C. Providing for attendance of members in court as necessary
for the prosecution or trial of persons charged with crimes and offenses.
D. Participating in a regionalist dispatch system.
E. Performing such other law enforcement duties as shall
from time to time be assigned in such law enforcement duties as are
permitted or required under the laws of the State of New Jersey.
There is established in the Township an Emergency
Management Council comprised of not more then 15 members to be appointed
by the Mayor with the approval of the Township Committee pursuant
to New Jersey statute. The Mayor shall appoint an Emergency Management
Coordinator from among the fifteen members of the Council, and the
Emergency Management Coordinator will serve as Chairman of the Council.
The Emergency Management Coordinator shall appoint a Deputy Emergency
Management Coordinator with the approval of the Mayor, and, whenever
possible, such Deputy Management Coordinator shall be appointed from
among the salaried employees of the Township. The Emergency Management
Coordinator shall coordinate civil defense and disaster control within
the Township and shall work with the members of the Council as well
as state and county officials in regard to such matters.
There shall be in the Township, as set forth
by ordinance, four volunteer fire companies located in Elwood, Nesco,
Weekstown and Sweetwater. There shall also be a Township Rescue Squad.
The Director of the Department of Public Safety shall provide for
the continuing liaison with the volunteer fire companies through the
Fire Chiefs Association and the Rescue Squad through the Chief of
the Fire Association.
