A.
Concrete sidewalk shall be constructed in accordance with the plans and specifications, at the required locations, and to the prescribed lines, grades, and dimensions.
B.
The concrete shall be Class B, as specified in § A385-52, and the work shall conform to the requirements specified in Article VII of this chapter.
C.
Metal forms shall be used, unless otherwise specified and approved by the Borough Engineer.
D.
The subgrade shall be constructed smooth and even, and shall be compacted to the satisfaction of the Borough Engineer.
E.
After being placed, the concrete shall be tamped, screeded, and finished to a true grade and surface. The finishing shall be done with a wood float, followed by brushing with a wet soft-haired brush to a neat and workmanlike surface. Expansion joints, 1/4 inch wide, shall be provided at intervals of 10 feet and filled with sand. Surface grooves shall be cut at right angles to the line of the sidewalk, midway between the expansion joints. Exposed edges shall be neatly rounded to a radius of 1/2 inch.
Four-inch bituminous concrete sidewalk shall be constructed as follows:
A.
This item shall be constructed to a grade so that, when the work is competed, the surface of the finished walk will be approximately the same elevation as the adjacent ground level except where variations are necessary to produce a neat and satisfactory sidewalk.
B.
The forms shall be one by two inches, securely held in place and set to conformity with the established lines and grades. Said forms shall be left in place.
C.
The base course shall be constructed on a previously prepared subgrade and shall consist of one-and-one-half-inch crushed stone compacted to a thickness of three inches, penetrated with bituminous binder at the rate of 1.5 gallons to 1.75 gallons per square yard, covered with a light application of five-eighths-inch crushed stone and rolled.
D.
The surface course shall be constructed on the previously prepared base course and shall consist of Type A or T bituminous concrete compacted to a thickness of one inch and covered with screenings.
A.
Description. The curb, gutter, or combination thereof shall be composed of a mixture of aggregate and asphalt and constructed on a prepared foundation in accordance with the specifications and in conformity with the lines, grades, and dimensions shown on the plans for the construction.
B.
Materials. All materials, including the aggregates and asphalt, shall conform to the requirements for these items as set forth in the Asphalt Institute's Specifications A-2-b for hot mix, hot-laid asphaltic concrete paving. Unless otherwise specified, the grading of the aggregate shall be within the limits of mix No. V of the specifications last referred to. The penetration of the asphalt shall be sixty to seventy (60-70) unless otherwise designated. The amount of asphalt used shall be from 6% to 8 1/2% by weight of total mix.
C.
Preparation of mixture. Mixing of aggregate and asphalt shall be done in an approved pugmill type mixer of not less than three cubic feet capacity. The mixing period, measured from the time all materials are in the mixer until they are discharged, shall not be less than 40 seconds. Mixing shall continue until all aggregate particles are uniformly coated with asphalt.
D.
Preparation of subgrade. The subgrade for the curb or curb and gutter shall be prepared under the direction of the Borough Engineer. The prepared subgrade shall be of sufficient strength to withstand all forces that may be exerted upon it. All soft and unstable material shall be removed and replaced with suitable materials. When indicated in the plans, a special foundation shall be placed,
E.
Placing mix. In machine placing of curb or curb and gutter, the cross section shall be as designated on the plans. In general, machine-laid work requires no additional compaction. In areas where it is evident that compaction is lacking, the curb or curb and gutter shall be further compacted by hand methods to the satisfaction of the Borough Engineer. No forms are necessary for machine-placed curbs. If no machine is available, hand placing of material may be made in wood or metal forms constructed to the desired shape of curb or gutter. Material placed by hand shall be tamped into place and screeded to a smooth finish in a workmanlike manner. No expansion joints are required. Forms may be removed as soon as the material has cooled to air temperature.
F.
Method of measurement; payment. Asphalt curb or curb and gutter shall be measured by the number of linear feet of work completed and accepted. No deduction will be made for flattening of curbs for entrances. The number of linear feet, determined as aforesaid, shall be paid for at the contract unit price per linear foot of asphalt curb or curb gutter, as the case may be. Said price and payment shall constitute full compensation for furnishing and placing all materials and performing all work hereinbefore described, including all labor, equipment, tools, and incidentals necessary to complete the work.
