1. Excavations are defined as man-made cut, cavity or depression at
least five feet deep in the earth's surface formed by earth removal.
2. Trenches are defined as narrow excavations at least five feet deep
below the surface of the ground in which the depth is greater than
the width.
3. Excavations, trenching and shoring shall be in conformance with applicable
Sections of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA),
subpart P, 1926.
4. No excavation or trench shall remain open for more than 30 days unless
regular construction activities require it to remain open and accessible.
5. Proper protection and barriers must be provided for all excavations
and trenches. Protection shall be provided for vehicular and pedestrian
traffic.
6. Adequate shoring shall be provided for all excavations and trenches
that are five feet or more in depth.
7. The location of all underground utilities shall be determined via
the Pennsylvania One Call prior to excavation.
8. Adjacent facilities and structures shall not be affected
in any way by the excavation, trenching or shoring.
