Where heavy applications of salt for the removal of snow
from sidewalks are anticipated, all sidewalks completed after September 15
shall, where directed, be protected for the first winter by a surface oil
treatment applied at the end of 28 days.
At the time of treatment, the concrete must be clean
and dry and the weather fair and warm. Spray on a solution of one part boiled
linseed oil and one part solvent such as turpentine. After this has been absorbed
and the pavement has a dry appearance, a second application is made using
a mixture of 50 to 100% linseed oil.
This protective treatment will darken the surface of
the concrete slightly but it is very effective for protecting the surface
against salts and frost damage, and can be used on old as well as new pavements
if they are clean and dry at the time of application.
