It is unlawful for anyone to operate or drive, upon any public highway, a bicycle, unless it has adequate brakes; a horn, bell or other warning device; an approved front and rear reflector visible for at least 200 feet; and a headlight visible for 500 feet if such bicycle is ridden after dusk. The term "dusk" means the period from 1/2 hour after sunset to 1/2 hour before sunrise.
No person shall ride on the rear of any vehicle without the consent of the driver.
No person who is over 12 years of age or who is not an invalid or cripple shall ride or operate any vehicle along any public sidewalk or footpath used by a pedestrian.
No driver of a motorcycle or bicycle shall carry another person thereon except on a seat securely fastened to the machine in the rear of the driver and provided with footrests and handgrips or in a sidecar attached to a motorcycle.
Bicycles must not be left standing or lying so as to obstruct streets, sidewalks, doorways, hallways, aisles or any public or private passageway.
No resident of the Village of Canton shall operate a bicycle in the Village of Canton unless such bicycle has been inspected and approved by the Village Police Department.
No individual or dealer shall buy or sell a bicycle without reporting the serial number to the Village Police Department.
A violation of this chapter shall constitute disorderly conduct, and such violation shall be punishable by a fine of not more than $50 for each violation, and, in default of payment of such fine, the person convicted shall be imprisoned in the St. Lawrence County Jail for not more than 30 days.
