For the purpose of these rules and orders, the
words and phrases used herein shall have the following meanings, except
in those instances where the context clearly indicates a different
meaning:
An area in a roadway set aside for the boarding of or alighting
from buses. (The word "bus" shall be constructed to mean every vehicle
designed for carrying more than nine passengers and used primarily
for the transportation of persons.)
A flashing yellow signal having the same general function
as a warning sign.
A traffic island located to guide traffic streams along certain
definite paths and to prevent the promiscuous movement of vehicles
in what would otherwise be a widely extended roadway area.
Any vehicle registered for commercial purpose and designed
and used primarily for the transportation of goods, wares or merchandise.
An opening in a channelizing island that connects both sides
of a divided highway.
That portion of a roadway ordinarily included within the
extensions of the sidewalk lines or, if none, then the footpath lines
and, at any place in a highway, clearly indicated for pedestrian crossing
by lines or markers upon the roadway surface.
That portion of a curbing, the painting of which has been
duly authorized by the Director of Public Works and has the written
approval of the Department of Public Works of the Commonwealth of
Massachusetts.
Vehicles of the Fire Department (Fire Patrol), police vehicles
and such ambulances and emergency vehicles of federal, state or municipal
departments or public service corporations as are commonly recognized
as such.
Any procession of mourners properly identified as such accompanying
the remains of a human body.
A parking space or area set aside for the exclusive use of
handicapped persons and where parking is prohibited or restricted
except to those vehicles displaying a distinguishing registration
number or plate issued by the Registrar of Motor Vehicles to handicapped
drivers or to nondrivers who are handicapped persons.

The area embraced within the extensions of the
lateral curblines or, if none, then the lateral boundary lines of
intersecting ways as defined in MGL c. 90, § 1, including
divided ways.
The rules and regulations herein contained governing
and restricting the movement of vehicles at and near intersecting
ways shall apply at any place along any way at which drivers are to
be controlled by traffic control signals, whether or not such place
is an intersection as herein defined.
A longitudinal division of a roadway of sufficient width
to accommodate the passage of a single line of vehicles, whether or
not such lane is indicated by pavement markings or longitudinal construction
joints.
Any police officer or any officer authorized to direct or
regulate traffic or to make arrests for violations of traffic regulations.
Roadways or streets designated by the rules and orders as
one-way and upon which vehicular traffic may move only in the direction
indicated by signs.
The parking by the same vehicle in a metered space for a
period of time exceeding the original metered time limit by more than
one hour or the act of inserting additional coins into a parking meter
for the purchase of time beyond the original metered time limit for
the same vehicle or the purchase of time beyond the original metered
time limit for the same vehicle using the same space within one hour
of the original expired time.

The standing of a vehicle, whether occupied or not, otherwise
than temporarily for the purpose of and while actually engaged in
loading or unloading or in obedience to an officer or traffic signs
or signals or while making emergency repairs or, if disabled, while
arrangements are being made to move such vehicle.
Any mechanical device not inconsistent with the provisions
of these rules and orders and placed or erected in any municipal off-street
parking area within the Town of Lexington for regulation of parking.
Each parking machine installed shall indicate by proper legend the
legal parking time established by these rules and orders. In addition
each machine shall dispense a ticket to be placed in plain view on
the dash of each vehicle.

Includes any municipal off-street parking area or portion
thereof in which a parking machine is installed and in operation and
upon which parking of vehicles is permitted for a limited time subject
to compliance with the further provisions of these rules and orders.

Any mechanical device not inconsistent with the provisions
of these rules and orders and placed or erected on any public way
or municipal off-street parking area within the Town of Lexington
for the regulation of parking. Each parking meter installed shall
indicate by proper legend the legal parking time established by these
rules and orders and, when operated, shall at all times indicate the
balance of legal parking time permitted and at the expiration of such
period shall indicate illegal or overtime parking.
Any space within a parking meter zone adjacent to a parking
meter which is duly designated for the parking of a single vehicle
by lines painted on the surface of the street or municipal off-street
parking area adjacent to or adjoining such parking meter.
Includes any street or portion thereof or municipal off-street
parking area upon which parking meters are installed and in operation
and upon which the parking of vehicles is permitted for a limited
time subject to compliance with the further provisions of these rules
and orders.
Any person afoot or riding on a conveyance moved by human
power, except bicycles or tricycles.
Includes any individual, firm, copartnership, association
or corporation.
Any intersection of ways with a railroad right-of-way.
That portion of a street or highway between the regularly
established curblines or that part, exclusive of shoulders, improved
and intended to be used for vehicular traffic.
The counterclockwise operation of a vehicle around an island
or other structure in the highway.
Any area or space set aside within a roadway for the exclusive
use of pedestrians and which has been indicated by signs, lines or
markings, having the written approval of the Department of Public
Works, Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
An area in the roadway or municipal off-street parking area
set side for the accommodation of commercial and transient vehicular
traffic.
That portion of a street or highway set aside for pedestrian
travel.
A flashing red signal having the same function as a stop
sign.
Any painted line, legend or marking of any description painted
or placed upon any way which purports to direct or regulate traffic
and which has been authorized by the Department of Public Works, Commonwealth
of Massachusetts.
The entire width between property lines of every way open
to the use of the public for purposes of travel.
An area in the roadway in which taxicabs are required to
park while waiting to be engaged.
Pedestrians, ridden or herded animals, vehicles, streetcars
or other conveyances, either singly or together, while using any street
or highway for the purpose of travel.
Any area along the way, other than an intersecting way, at
which drivers are to be controlled by traffic control signals.
Any device using colored lights which conforms to the standards
as prescribed by the Department of Public Works of the Commonwealth
of Massachusetts, whether manually, electrically or mechanically operated,
by which traffic may be alternately directed to stop and to proceed.
Any area or space set aside, within a roadway, which is not
intended for use by vehicular traffic.
All signs, markings and devices, other than signals, not
inconsistent with these rules and orders and which conform to the
standards prescribed by the Department of Public Works of the Commonwealth
of Massachusetts and are placed or erected by authority of a public
body or official having jurisdiction for the purpose of guiding, directing,
warning or regulating traffic.
All signals conforming to the standards as prescribed by
the Department of Public Works of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts,
not inconsistent with these rules and orders, placed or erected by
authority of a public body or official having jurisdiction for the
purpose of directing or warning traffic.
The turning of a vehicle by means of a continuous left turn
whereby the direction of such vehicle is reversed.
Every device in, upon or by which any person or property
is or may be transported or drawn upon a highway, including bicycles
when the provisions of these rules are applicable to them, except
other devices moved by human power or used exclusively upon stationary
rails or tracks and devices which derive their power for operation
from stationary overhead wires.
