The purpose of this article is to prohibit the maintaining, keeping or possessing of certain animals within the Borough of Glenolden and to regulate the number of certain other animals within the Borough of Glenolden in order to promote the health, safety and general welfare of its inhabitants. Where the provisions of this article shall impose greater restrictions than those of any other ordinance or regulation or resolution, the provisions of this article shall be controlling.

No person or corporation shall maintain, keep or possess within the Borough of Glenolden any of the following animals, which classifications shall be broadly construed: apes; cows; goats; horses and ponies; lions; mice; monkeys; poultry; rats; rodents, including moles, muskrats and squirrels; all snakes; swine; tigers; wolves.

The number of cats maintained in any dwelling unit shall be limited to two and the number of dogs maintained in any dwelling unit shall be limited to two; provided, however, there may also be maintained in any dwelling unit two puppies up to the age of six months. Also, the following birds may be maintained in any dwelling unit: canaries, finches, myna birds, parakeets and parrots.
The provisions of this article shall not apply to a duly authorized pet shop operating under a permit issued therefor under the applicable ordinances of the Borough of Glenolden, nor to a registered veterinary hospital operating under a permit issued therefor under the applicable ordinances of the Borough of Glenolden.
Any person or persons violating the provisions of this article, upon conviction thereof in a summary proceeding, shall be sentenced to pay a fine not exceeding $300 and costs of prosecution and, in default of payment thereof, the defendant may be sentenced and committed to the county jail for a period not exceeding 30 days for each and every offense.
