This article shall govern the construction and
maintenance of awnings, canopies and marquees over the sidewalks in
the City.
As used in this article, the following terms
shall have the meanings indicated:
CANOPY or MARQUEE
A structure of metal or wood or other approved building material
which protrudes from the face of a building and overhangs or covers
part of a sidewalk.

Minimum clearance from a sidewalk to the underside
of a canopy or marquee shall be nine feet, including supporting members.
Width is limited to within one foot of curbline and no supporting
columns will be allowed. The structure must be supported by struts
or by cantilever or other approved method, other than by posts.
Such canopy or marquee must be able to support
a minimum load of 40 pounds per square foot.
The materials used and the method of installation
of such structures shall be approved by the City Building Official.
A canopy or marquee is to be considered part
of the building to which it is attached, and the owner of the same
shall assume full responsibility for the safe maintenance and care
of said structure and full liability for damages of whatsoever nature
arising out of the defective or unsafe condition of said structure.
Cloth awnings may be constructed in front of
any store or building within the City to project over the sidewalk
not to exceed 10 feet, provided that such awnings shall be supported
by iron brackets or iron framework securely attached to said building
in such a manner as to be at all times safe and self-supporting, and
provided that every part of such awnings shall be at least six feet
six inches above the sidewalk and the iron brackets or framework attached
to said awnings shall be erected at least seven feet above the sidewalk.
All cloth awnings now or hereafter erected shall be supported or sustained
in such a manner that they will not sink or sag below the above height.
