Work under this item shall consist of one or
more courses, each course not exceeding four inches in thickness after
final compaction, on the prepared subbase in accordance with these
specifications.
The materials for this work shall conform to
the requirements of State Form 810, Article M.05.01.
A.
Coarse aggregate shall be either gravel or broken
stone, at the option of the contractor. However, only one type of
coarse aggregate shall be used within a single subdivision.
B.
The aggregate for each course shall be spread uniformly
upon the prepared subbase directly from approved spreader or stone
boxes, to a depth that will have a depth of four inches after final
compaction. Power graders shall not be permitted to spread the aggregate.
After the aggregate is spread, it shall then be thoroughly compacted,
and during the compacting, water shall be applied from an approved
watering device by a vertical spray delivering a flushing stream.
C.
The compacting and wetting shall be continued until
the voids in the aggregates have been reduced to the minimum obtainable.
The compacting shall be continued until the course is thoroughly compacted
to a firm and uniform surface satisfactory to the Town Engineer.
D.
Brooms shall be used during the wetting and compacting
to distribute any fines uniformly over the surface.
E.
The subbase shall be maintained true to line and grade
at all times, at least 200 feet in advance of the unbound course.
Depositing aggregate more than 500 feet ahead of the compacting operation
will not be permitted at any time, and all aggregate shall be completely
compacted and bound at the end of each day's work when the road is
open to traffic of any kind.
F.
Should the subbase material become churned up or mixed
with the processed aggregate base at any time, the contractor shall
remove the mixture, reshape and compact the subbase and replace the
material removed with clean, coarse material, which shall be compacted
and wetted as specified above until thoroughly compacted to a firm,
uniform surface.
G.
Should any irregularities of surface develop during
or after the compacting, they shall be remedied by loosening the material
already in place and removing or adding coarse aggregate as required,
after which the entire area, including the surrounding surface, shall
be compacted, broomed and wetted and the compacting continued until
it is compacted to a uniform surface.
H.
All compacting shall be done with a power roller weighing
not less than 10 tons or with an equivalent vibratory roller or compactor.
The compacting shall begin at the sides and progress toward the center,
parallel with the center line of the pavement, uniformly lapping each
preceding track and covering thoroughly the entire surface. Areas
of special cross slope shall be compacted beginning at the low edge
and proceeding towards the high edge or as directed by the Town Engineer.
