This work shall include the installation of
machine-laid bituminous concrete curbing along all streets and turnarounds
to the dimensions shown in the details.
Materials for this work shall conform to the
requirements of State Form 810, Article M.04.01, Class 3.
The applicable sections of the herein-contained
specification for two-course bituminous concrete shall govern. In
addition, the curbing shall be constructed in accordance with the
following requirements:
A. Prior to the arrival of the mixture at the work, the
surface of the pavement where the curbing is to be constructed shall
be cleaned of all loose and foreign material. The surface, which shall
be perfectly dry and clean at the time the mix is placed, shall be
coated with an RC-250 or other approved bitumen just prior to placing
the mixture.
B. On arrival at the site, the mixture shall be transferred
from the truck to the hopper of the curbing machine and the mixture
shall be kept clean and free from dirt or foreign materials at all
times.
C. The surface of the curbing shall be tested with a
ten-foot straight edge and any variation from a true line exceeding
1/4 inch shall be satisfactorily corrected. The only compaction required
shall be that obtained by the approved mechanical curbing machine.
D. Where machine work is impractical, the Engineer may
permit hand-laid curbing to be constructed.
E. If the design of the curbing machine is such that
the outside wheels operate outside the curb, the contractor will be
required to obtain a smooth surface by grading and consolidating the
area on which the outside wheel of the machine rides.
F. After the completion of curbing, traffic shall be
kept at a safe distance for a period of not less than 24 hours and
until the curbing has set sufficiently to prevent injury to the work.
G. Any curbing damaged by traffic prior to acceptance
of the street by the Town shall be replaced in accordance with these
specifications.
