A. 
Vertical piping shall be secured at sufficiently close intervals to keep the pipe in alignment and to carry the weight of the pipe and contents.
B. 
Supports shall provide secure support for the pipe without excessive strain on joints or connections and shall properly transmit the load to the building structure or to independent posts, piers and foundations.
C. 
All vertical drainage piping shall have base supports and, when more than 30 feet in height, shall have intermediate supports spaced not more than two stories or 25 feet on centers, except for no-hub cast-iron soil pipe.
(1) 
No-hub cast-iron soil pipe shall be supported with a riser clamp located at each floor. When the distance between floors is greater than 10 feet, the vertical piping shall be supported every 10 feet using riser clamps, where possible, or ridged supports securely fastened to the building structure.
(2) 
Closet bends, traps, trap arms and similar branches must be firmly secured against movement in any direction.
D. 
Building drains shall not be installed or arranged so as to support load from vertical piping. Pipe supports shall be of approved type. Pipe hooks shall not be used.
E. 
ABS and PVC plastic pipe shall be supported and contained every five feet.
A. 
Horizontal piping above the ground shall be supported at points sufficiently close to keep it in alignment and to prevent sagging.
B. 
The spacing of supports for horizontal piping shall not exceed seven feet for bell-and-spigot cast-iron pipe and 10 feet for other piping, except for lead pipe, plastic pipe and no-hub cast-iron soil pipe.
(1) 
Cast-iron no-hub soil pipe shall be supported by using all-thread rod-and-clevis hangers, and provisions shall be made to prevent swaying. Sway bracing shall be installed where necessary. Hangers shall be provided at least every other joint, except that when the developed length between hangers exceeds five feet, they shall be provided at each joint. In no case shall hangers or supports be more than five feet apart. Hangers shall be placed immediately adjacent to the coupling. Masonry piers may be used where applicable.
C. 
Lead pipe, plastic pipe (flexible) and rigid polyethylene (nalgene drainage system) shall have continuous supports for its entire length.
D. 
Horizontal piping underground shall be firmly supported on the bottom of the trench, and proper depressions shall be provided under the bells of drainage piping to ensure support for its entire length.
E. 
Drainage piping installed in bad or filled ground shall be bell-and-spigot cast-iron pipe with lead and oakum joints or hard copper Type L.
F. 
ABS and PVC plastic pipe (rigid Schedule 40) shall be supported at five-inch intervals.
A. 
Hangers and anchors shall be made of suitable material of adequate strength, capable of providing secure and permanent support and shall be securely attached to the building construction.
B. 
Hangers or anchors attached to masonry shall not be fastened to wooden plugs inserted in the masonry.
All piping in a plumbing system shall be installed without excessively stressing or straining any pipe or connection, with provisions, where necessary, for expansion, contraction and settlement of the supporting structure.
A. 
All piping in a plumbing system shall be installed in such manner as to protect pipes against breakage, corrosion, freezing and entry of foreign objects.
B. 
Breakage. Pipes passing under or through walls shall be protected against loads which might result in breakage.
C. 
Corrosion. Pipes passing through or under cinder concrete or other corrosive material shall be protected against external corrosion with bitumastic material.
A. 
Abandoned drainage. Abandoned laterals shall have the house trap removed, and the pipe shall be hermetically sealed by a cap or plug at the curbline. Abandoned drainage piping within the building shall be hermetically sealed by a cap or plug.
B. 
Abandoned water piping. Abandoned water services shall be capped or plugged at the curb or shall have the ferrule removed. Abandoned water piping within the building shall be capped or plugged with a fitting.
In order to prevent freezing, the following standards shall apply:
A. 
In new buildings, all soil, waste and vent pipes above the ground shall be located inside the buildings.
B. 
In old buildings, when permitted by the Plumbing Inspector, pipes may be installed outside.
C. 
Underground piping outside of buildings shall have a minimum of three feet of cover, except curb-extended rainwater piping.
