It is the purpose of this article to supersede and modify the requirements of Town Law § 151 which requires police officers in the Town of Bedford to reside in any town or village in the county in which the Town of Bedford is situated at the time of his or her appointment and Public Officers Law § 3(2), which section requires police officers in the Town of Bedford to reside:
A. 
In the county in which the Town of Bedford is located; or
B. 
In a county within the state contiguous to the county in which the Town of Bedford is located; or
C. 
In a county within the state contiguous to the Town of Bedford; or
D. 
In a county within the state contiguous to a county described in Subsection C hereof where the former is less than 15 miles from such Town of Bedford, measured from their respective nearest boundary lines; or
E. 
In a county within the state contiguous to a county described in Subsection D hereof where the former is less than 30 miles from the Town of Bedford, measured from their respective nearest boundary lines.
This article is enacted pursuant to the provisions of §§ 10 and 22(1) of the Municipal Home Rule Law.
Police officers in the Town of Bedford need not reside in any town or village in the county in which the Town of Bedford is situated or comply with the residency requirements as set forth in Public Officers Law § 3(2). Police officers in the Town of Bedford shall reside in one of the following counties at the time of their appointment: Westchester, Nassau, Bronx, Manhattan and Queens, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk, Dutchess or Ulster.
This article shall take effect upon filing with the Secretary of State.
