Beginning with the year nineteen hundred and twenty-nine, municipal elections in the city for the choice of mayor, members of the council and members of the school committee shall be held biennially on the Tuesday next following the first Monday in November in each odd numbered year.
At the municipal election to be held in the city in December in the year nineteen hundred and twenty-eight, the mayor and members of the council elected at large shall be elected to serve for one year from the first Monday in January following their election and until their successors are qualified. At the biennial election to be held in the city in nineteen hundred and twenty-nine and at every biennial municipal election thereafter, the mayor and all members of the council shall be elected to serve for two years from the first Monday in January following their election and until their successors are qualified.
On the first Monday in January following a regular municipal election, or on the day following when said first Monday is a holiday, at ten o'clock in the forenoon, the mayor-elect and the councillors-elect shall meet and be sworn to the faithful discharge of their duties. The oath shall be administered as provided in section seventeen of chapter forty-three of the General Laws.
Members of the school committee of the city, except members elected to fill vacancies, elected in the year nineteen hundred and twenty-seven, shall continue to hold office until the qualification of their successors who shall be elected at the biennial municipal election in the year nineteen hundred and thirty-one. Members of said school committee to be elected in the year nineteen hundred and twenty-eight shall be elected to serve for three years, and those to be elected in the year nineteen hundred and twenty-nine shall be elected to serve for four years from the first Monday in January following their election and until their successors are qualified. At the biennial municipal election in the year nineteen hundred and thirty-one there shall be elected four members of the school committee, one to serve for two years and three to serve for four years from the first Monday in January following their election and until their successors are qualified, and thereafter at every biennial municipal election three members of the school committee shall be elected to serve for four years from the first Monday in January following their election and until their successors are qualified. Vacancies in the school committee shall be filled as provided in section thirty-six of chapter forty-three of the General Laws as amended by section six of chapter two hundred and thirty-seven of the acts of nineteen hundred and twenty-two.[1]
