A. 
The commonwealth's attorney for the City shall have such powers and perform such duties as may be prescribed by the charter or by general law.
B. 
The commonwealth's attorney shall devote full time to his duties and shall not engage in the private practice of law.

A. 
Assistant attorneys for the commonwealth of the City may be appointed by the commonwealth's attorney for the City, after having first received approval of the City Council and of the state compensation board, for a term of office coterminous with his/her own.
B. 
All assistant commonwealth attorneys for the City shall perform such duties as are prescribed by the commonwealth's attorney.
C. 
An assistant commonwealth's attorney for the City shall devote his full time to his duties and shall not engage in the private practice of law if the City Council and the state compensation board concur that he shall so serve.

The City Attorney shall be appointed within 60 days of the City Council's organizational meeting by a majority vote of the members of the City Council present. His term of office shall be for the two ensuing years thereafter.

The salary of the City Attorney shall be in such sum as determined by the City Council from time to time.

The City Attorney shall attend regular meetings of the City Council, and notices of such meetings shall be sent to him by the clerk of the City Council. He shall attend such special meetings as he may be requested to attend. He shall give his opinion and advise the City Council concerning matters upon which he may be interrogated. He shall render advice and render opinions in writing, when so requested, to any member of the City Council or to the City Manager, concerning any legal matters affecting the City. He shall defend all actions or suits instituted by or against the City. He shall communicate with the Mayor, the City Council, and the City Manager any matters which he deems to vitally affect the interest of the City, and perform such additional duties and services as may be prescribed by the City Council from time to time. The City Attorney shall act as counsel and attorney for the City Manager.

The City Council may at any time appoint, by a majority vote of the members of City Council present, an Assistant City Attorney to serve at the will of the City Council. It shall be the duty of the assistant to perform such of the duties imposed upon the City Attorney and to render such assistance to the City Attorney as may be required by the City Attorney or by the City Council. The salary of the Assistant City Attorney shall be in such sum as determined by the City Council from time to time.
