A.ย 
If this City is aided by any Fire Department of any other city or town in the commonwealth, and such city or town suffers damage to its property by rendering such aid, or lawfully makes payments to any member of its Fire Department, or to his widow or other dependents, on account of injuries or death suffered by him in the course of rendering aid, as described in this section, or of death resulting from such injuries, this City may compensate such other city or town rendering aid as described in this section.
B.ย 
Compensation mentioned in this section shall be paid only after certification by the Chief of the City Fire Department that such damage to property was sustained or such death or injuries occurred while in the performance of the duty of rendering aid to the City when called upon under the provisions of law.
A.ย 
Authorized. The Fire Department of this City is hereby authorized to go to aid another city or town or fire district in this commonwealth or in an adjoining state to extinguish fires therein. Such aid shall be rendered whenever, in the judgment of the Chief of the Fire Department, it is necessary or appropriate to do so.
B.ย 
Rights of firefighters. The members of the Fire Department of this City shall have the same immunities and privileges while in the performance of their duties in extending aid referred to in Subsection A of this section as if performing such duties within the City.
A.ย 
The head of the Fire Department may order a fire watch to be established in any building, outlet, mall, area, complex, entertainment event or other such event where in his opinion a fire hazard may be present or public safety may be endangered in case of fire.
B.ย 
If a fire alarm system or a sprinkler system is inoperative in any building that in the event of a fire could present a danger to life and property, the head of the Fire Department may order such watch to be put in place for such time as he deems necessary.
C.ย 
The head of the Fire Department shall determine that the fire watch may be staffed by private security, private employees or off-duty firefighters. The owner of such building or the sponsor of such event shall be responsible for payment for such fire watch.
D.ย 
Failure to comply with such order of the head of the Fire Department shall result in a fine of $150 per day after written notice of such order is presented to the owner by the head of the Fire Department or his designee.

Established; duties; supervision. The Fire Prevention Code shall be enforced by the Bureau of Fire Prevention in the Fire Department of the City, which is hereby established and which shall be operated under the supervision of the Chief of the Fire Department.
B.ย 
Chief. The Chief in charge of the Bureau of Fire Prevention shall be appointed by the Chief of the Fire Department.

C.ย 
Inspectors. The Chief of the Fire Department may detail such members of the Fire Department as inspectors as shall from time to time be necessary.
D.ย 
Reports and recommendations. A report of the Bureau of Fire Prevention shall be made annually and transmitted to the Chief Executive Officer of the City. It shall contain all proceedings under the Fire Prevention Code, with such statistics as the Chief of the Fire Department may wish to include therein. The Chief of the Fire Department shall also recommend any amendments to the code which in his judgment shall be desirable.

Fees charged by the Fire Department, in addition to such other fees as may be set by law or by ordinance, shall be as provided in Chapter A110, Fee Schedule, of the City Code.

A.ย 
The position of Fire Chief shall be governed by the provisions of Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 31.
B.ย 
The Fire Chief shall be the head of the Fire Department and shall be responsible for the management and operation of said department and shall be the "appointing authority" for all employees of the Fire Department in accordance with MGL c. 31, ยงย 1, with all the rights, duties and privileges appurtenant thereto and as contained in subsequent sections of Chapter 31 and any other general or special law applicable to chiefs of departments.
C.ย 
The Fire Chief shall be appointed by the Mayor and shall be confirmed by the City Council. The terms and conditions of the Chief's employment shall be contained in a contract pursuant to MGL c. 41, ยงย 108O for a period not exceeding three years. The terms and conditions of said contract shall be negotiated by the Mayor and approved by the City Council.
The Fire Chief may appoint, subject to the civil service laws and regulations of the commonwealth, the officers and members of the Fire Department and fix their duties.
The Fire Chief shall determine the number of officers and members of the Fire Department.
The average weekly hours of duty in any year for members of the Fire Department, other than hours during which firefighters may be summoned and kept on duty because of conflagrations, shall not exceed 42 in number.
