The following words, terms and phrases, when used in this article, shall have the meanings ascribed to them in this section, except where the context clearly indicates a different meaning:
HOTEL or MOTEL
Any building or part thereof kept, used or maintained as or held out to the public to be an inn or hotel where travelers or members of the public, including gratuitous guests, are furnished with sleeping accommodations, and which may include a general kitchen and a public dining room where the guests and general public may be served with food and drink.

Every person in charge of a hotel or motel or his or her agent, servant or employee shall provide and maintain a handwritten or computerized registry documenting for each guest their time of arrival, the correct name of every guest renting or occupying a room, together with the home street and City address of each such guest, and the number of the space assigned, together with the time when such was rented. When any guest shall terminate his or her stay, the time thereof shall be entered in the register. Such register shall be open to inspection to police and fire officers on official business.

It shall be unlawful for any person to write, or cause or permit to be entered into a computerized system, in any hotel or motel register any other or different name or designation than the true name of the person so registered.

Whenever the person in charge of a hotel or motel or his or her agent, servant or employee knows or has reasonable cause for believing that any person has inscribed, or caused or permitted to be entered into a computerized system, a false name or given false information in the register required by this article, it shall be his or her duty to forthwith notify the Department of Public Safety of such fact.
