The Fire Chief shall have the sole control and command over
the members of the Fire Department; and in the absence of the Fire
Chief, the chief officer on duty shall have the powers and perform
the duties that belong to and are required of the Fire Chief.
Whenever the magnitude of a fire shall make it necessary, the
Fire Chief or, in his absence, the chief officer on duty is authorized
to employ special firefighters for the occasion.
The Fire Chief shall be responsible for the proper maintenance
of the equipment and buildings of the Fire Department.
It shall be the duty of the Fire Chief to immediately investigate
the cause, circumstances and origin of each and every fire in the
City, and especially to examine whether it was the result of carelessness
or design.
There is hereby created an Auxiliary Fire Department to consist
of up to 30 people to assist the regular full-time Department when
needed for the purpose of fire fighting.
The current edition of the National Fire Protection Association's
No. 101 Life Safety Code, as adopted by the State of Maine, is hereby
adopted by reference by the Fire Department.
