[Amended 6-23-1992 STM by Art. 4]
The Selectboard shall develop a street numbering system for all streets in the Town. The Selectboard shall also name streets and/or roads not already named on the Town Map and, when naming, shall use the shortest or most common street names.
[Added 6-23-1992 STM by Art. 5]
A.
Street numbers shall be assigned and attached to each dwelling, business, shop, industry and other buildings which are not accessory in nature in the Town of Whately.
B.
The number shall be made of permanent, weatherproof materials, shall be at least three inches in height in a contrasting color and shall be clearly visible from the public way upon which the structure fronts.
C.
Any structure which is not visible from the street or roadway shall have the assigned number posted on a suitable support, separate from any mailbox support, at the entrance to the driveway that services such structure.
D.
The numbers posted shall be those assigned to each structure by the Selectboard. They shall advise the owners of the property of the assigned or reassigned number, in writing, at the property's tax address.
E.
It shall be the responsibility of each property owner in the Town to obtain and display the assigned street number within 90 days of adoption of this chapter at the Town Meeting and thereafter to maintain the assigned number in a sightly and readable fashion.
F.
This chapter shall be enforced by the Police Department. Failure to comply with this chapter shall subject the property owner(s) to a fine of not more than $25 for each offense (an "offense" being defined as a period of noncompliance of 30 days subsequent to the initial ninety-day grace period following the adoption of this chapter). Compliance within a thirty-day period will result in the cancellation of any such assessed fine.
