There is hereby authorized and established the Knowlton Township Fire and Rescue Company. The aforesaid department is composed of two companies, to be known as the "Knowlton Township Fire and Rescue Company No. 1." Additional companies may be authorized from time to time as deemed appropriate by the Knowlton Township Committee.
No person shall hereafter become a member of the Fire Department or rescue squad of Knowlton Township or any unit thereof unless above the age of 18, except for junior members, who shall be above the age of 16, and of good moral character. He or she shall be physically fit to perform the duties of a fireperson and/or that of a rescue worker, evidenced by a certificate to that effect by a practicing physician of the State of New Jersey, after physical examination for said purpose. Each applicant shall be subject to a complete background check to be conducted by the Township Committee and shall not be made a permanent member of the Fire Company or rescue squad until the Township Committee certifies that the applicant's background check has proven to be satisfactory to the Township. Any member wishing to join the New Jersey State Firemen's Relief Association must abide by the (N.J.F.R.A) rules and regulations.
Every person seeking to join the Knowlton Township Fire and Rescue Company No. 1 shall make application to the company or unit which he or she desires to join. Each applicant shall first serve a three-month probationary period before he or she may be elected as a permanent member. Upon his or her election to permanent membership by vote of a majority of the unit present and voting, he or she shall become a member in good standing of the Knowlton Township Fire and Rescue Company No. 1, after approval of his or her membership by the Chief and confirmation by the Township Committee. His or her name shall then be entered on a roll of fire and rescue persons kept by the Knowlton Township Clerk.
Exemption certificates may be issued to members of the Fire Department who shall have served seven years in active duty under municipal control, as required by law of April 29, 1935, as amended May 26, 1936. See N.J.S.A. 40A:14-56. Active duty consists of performing at least 60% of duties to be comprised of attendance of monthly meetings, performance at fires and drills and/or rescues for a period of seven years, which need not be consecutive.

The rescue squad shall cover the entire Township of Knowlton, with the exception of the Clover Rest Home in Columbia and Interstate 80, Knowlton Township, Milemarker 1.5 to Milemarker 8.9.
This article shall supersede and repeal Ordinance No. 95-02.

The Knowlton Township Fire and Rescue Company No. 1 may establish a program, either directly or through a third-party billing agency with which it has contracted for billing and/or collection services, to solicit payments for the actual costs of materials used and the actual costs associated with vehicle and equipment used in fighting fires and/or providing emergency services.
