Each guest room, suite or sleeping area of Use Group R-1 (residential; hotel; motel; lodging house; boardinghouse; and dormitory) and each dwelling unit within buildings of Use Groups R-2 (residential; multifamily), R-3 (residential one- and two-family) and R-4 (detached one- and two-family) shall be provided with a minimum of one approved smoke detector on each level of the premises and outside of each sleeping area in a manner and location approved by the authority having jurisdiction and in compliance with applicable sections of NFPA Standard 74 governing the installation, maintenance and use of house-fire-warning systems and the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code (the BOCA Basic Building Code 1975).
