All nonresidential and certain multifamily residential structures
within Lower Paxton Township having an automatic fire alarm system
or a fire sprinkler system shall be equipped with a key box. Affected
multifamily structures shall be those having restricted access through
locked doors and have a common corridor for access to living units.
Exempt from the requirements of this article shall be hospitals and
nursing homes that provide professional services 24 hours per day.
The key box shall be a UL type and approved by a Township building
code enforcement officer. The rapid entry key box shall be installed
in a location approved by the Fire Chief representing the service
area in which the structure will be located.
The key box must be installed and secured with the Fire Department-protected
key, and with all required keys installed, prior to the issuance of
an occupancy permit. The rapid key boxes shall contain the following:
A. Keys to locked points of entry, whether on the interior or exterior
of the structure;
B. Keys to the locked mechanical rooms;
C. Keys to the locked elevator rooms;
D. Keys to the elevator controls;
E. Keys to any fence or secured areas;
F. Keys to any other areas as directed by the representative of the
Fire Chief.
Any person, firm, or corporation who or which shall violate
any provision of this article or shall fail to comply with any of
the requirements thereof shall be punishable by a fine not to exceed
$1,000 plus costs, and in default of payment of such fine and costs
to imprisonment not to exceed 30 days.
The provisions of this article shall apply to all structures
built on or after July 1, 2001.
