Pursuant to Section II of the Uniform Fire Safety Act (P.L. 1983, c. 383) the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code shall be locally enforced in the Township.

The local enforcement agency shall enforce the Uniform Fire Safety Act and the codes and regulations adopted under it in all buildings, structures and premises within the established boundaries of the Township, other than owner-occupied one and two family dwellings and shall faithfully comply with the requirements of the Uniform Fire Safety Act and the Uniform Fire Code.

The local enforcing agency established by subsection 18-1.2 shall carry out the periodic inspections of life hazard uses required by the Uniform Fire Code on behalf of the Commissioner of Community Affairs.

The local enforcing agency established by subsection 18-1.2 shall be the Department of Public Safety and shall be under the direct supervision and control of the Director of Public Safety.

a. 
Appointment of Fire Official. The local enforcing agency shall be under the direct supervision of the Fire Official who shall be appointed pursuant to the Uniform Fire Safety Act (P.L. 1983, c.383).
The Fire Official shall be the Chief of Operations of the Fire Department.
b. 
Term of office. The Fire Official shall serve for a term of one year.
c. 
Inspectors and employees. Such inspectors and other employees as may be necessary for the local enforcing agency to properly carry out its responsibilities shall be appointed the Council-Manager upon the recommendation of the Director of Public Safety.
d. 
Removal from office. Inspectors and other employees of the enforcing agency shall be subject to removal by the Council-Manager. Each inspector or employee to be so removed shall be afforded an opportunity to be heard by the appointing authority or a designated hearing officer.

Pursuant to Sections 15 and 17 of the Uniform Fire Safety Act, any person aggrieved by any order of the local enforcement agency shall have the right to appeal to the Construction Board of Appeals of the County of Hudson.

In addition to the inspection and fees required pursuant to the Act and the regulations of the Department of Community Affairs the following additional inspections and fees shall be required:

Residential - Six dwelling units or more

Mercantile - All buildings and structures which are used for display and sales purposes involving stocks of goods, wares or merchandise incidental to such purpose and accessible to the public, including among other, retail stores, shops and salesrooms and markets, less than 2,500 square feet

Mercantile & Dwelling Unit(s) - less than 2,500 square feet plus $25 for each additional dwelling unit; maximum, $175 total

Business - Buildings and structures used for the transaction of business for the rendering of professional services that involve stacks of goods, wares or merchandise in limited quantities for use incidental to office uses, including among others banks, civic administration facilities, out-patient clinics, professional services, testing and research laboratories, radio and television studios and telephone exchanges not included under other life hazard uses.

Factories and industrial - occupancies engaged in performing work or labor in fabricating assembling or processing of products or materials including among others factory assembling plants, industrial laboratories and all other industrial and manufacturing uses not included in other life hazard uses.
