The roof and walls of the structure are waterproof and windproof. Bedding must be kept dry and changed regularly to preserve insulating qualities. Insulation and an inner wall must be included in shelter for dogs with short fur (example: pointers, Staffordshire terriers, boxers, and Labrador retrievers) to provide adequate protection from cold. During cold weather a moveable flap must be placed over the entrance to a dog shelter to preserve the dog's body heat. Adequate shelter from sun may be provided by a tarp placed in a manner to provide deep shade and allow air to pass through for ventilation.
