is the charter of the City of Liberty, Texas, which was adopted at
an election held on May 6, 1958. Apart from minor nonsubstantive changes
in style and formatting, the charter is reproduced as it appeared
in the 1988 Code of Ordinances. Capitalization, punctuation and grammar
have been retained. Obviously misspelled words have been corrected
without notation. Material enclosed in brackets has been added for
clarification. Amendments to the charter are indicated by a history
note following the amended section. The absence of a history note
indicates the material is unchanged from the original charter.
PREAMBLE
We, the citizens of Liberty, Texas, in order to establish a
home rule municipal government, provide for the future progress of
our city and obtain more fully the benefits of local self-government,
do hereby adopt this home rule charter in accordance with the statutes
of the State of Texas; and do hereby declare the residents of the
City of Liberty in Liberty County, Texas, living within the legally
established boundaries of the said city, to be a political subdivision
of the State of Texas incorporated forever under the name and style
of the “City of Liberty” with such powers, rights and
duties as are herein provided.
