(a) 
The office of city marshal is hereby abolished.
(b) 
There is hereby created and established the office of city police chief, said city police chief to be appointed by the city council at its first regular meeting after the first Tuesday in April of each year, and shall hold office for the term of one year and until his successor is appointed and qualified, unless sooner removed by the city council, and said officer shall be removable at any time by the city council.
(c) 
The acting city marshal who was appointed April 12, 1966, shall continue in such capacity until such time as the council shall appoint a city police chief under the terms of this section; upon the appointment of such city police chief by the city council under this section and the qualification of such appointee the present city marshal shall immediately vacate said office.
(d) 
The qualifications of the city police chief shall be as follows: He shall be a resident of the city and a qualified voter under the laws of the state.
(e) 
The office of city police chief shall have the same duties and responsibilities as the office of city marshal as provided by the laws of the state.
(f) 
The salary of the city police chief shall be set by the city council.
