Each length of pipe, and each pipe fitting, trap, fixture, and device used in a plumbing system shall have cast, stamped, or indelibly marked on it the maker’s mark or name, the weight, and the quality of the product, when such marking is required by the approved standard that applies.

Secondhand materials, fixtures and fittings shall not be used unless they meet the requirements of this article and are in satisfactory physical and sanitary condition.

(a) 
All water pipes from water meters to and through the building used for supplying plumbing fixtures and water systems shall be wrought iron galvanized, merchant steel galvanized, brass pipe (iron pipe size and weight), lead pipe of weight known to the trade as “extra-strong,” block tin, cast iron, tin lined tubing or copper water tube made from dioxidized copper 99.99% pure in accordance with A.S.T.M. specifications in two types, namely: type K and L. All copper water tubing used above ground shall be hard tempered copper except that soft copper may be used by special permission of the plumbing inspector in compliance with this article.
(b) 
All fittings used in the water supply system shall be galvanized malleable fittings, galvanized cast iron fittings, brass fittings, copper or cast brass sweat fittings or cast brass flared type fittings for copper tubes.
(c) 
Pipe or fittings that have been used for any other purpose shall not be used in water supply systems.

(a) 
All pipe and fittings used for waste and vent lines in buildings shall be constructed of materials as follows: Cast iron soil pipe and fittings shall be of grades known to the trade as “service weight” conforming to A.S.T.M. specifications. Duriron pipe and fittings or other approved acid resisting material may be used in this construction. Hard tempered copper tubing of type K, L, and M and cast brass (solder) drainage fittings of 1-1/2" and larger size only, conforming to A.S.T.M. specifications, may be used in this construction. Threaded pipe used in waste and vent construction shall be of grade known to the trade as “genuine wrought iron,” and to be galvanized inside and outside. All fittings used in wrought iron waste construction shall be cast iron galvanized, recessed, threaded drainage fittings, known as “durham” pattern. Fittings used in vent lines in wrought iron construction may be standard malleable galvanized threaded fittings (above the water line of fixture) up to and including 2", and above 2" may be standard cast iron galvanized threaded fittings. Cast iron threaded pipe of 2" diameter or less may be used for vents only. Fittings for cast iron threaded pipe, for vents (above the water line of fixture) may be standard galvanized malleable fittings or cast iron fittings. Lead pipe used for waste, vent or flush pipe must not be of lighter weight than that known to the trade as “extra light.” Brass pipe used for waste or vent lines as provided for in this division shall be of iron pipe size and weight with standard thread.
(b) 
Lead soil, waste and vent pipe shall not be lighter than “D” or “KL” weight, as shown in the following table:

(c) 
All clay pipe and fittings used for house sewers shall be no. 1 vitrified clay pipe which shall meet all the requirements of the A.S.T.M. specifications. All concrete pipe fittings used for house sewers shall be no. 1 concrete pipe which will meet all the requirements of the A.S.T.M. specifications. All bends for concrete sewer pipe shall be one piece molded bends. No bends or fittings shall be made up on the job. Vitrified clay and concrete pipe and fittings shall have been inspected and stamped by an independent laboratory, satisfactory to the city plumbing inspector at the expense of the supplier.

All cleanout plugs shall be of cast brass or other noncorrosive metal with screw male thread and the body or ferrule shall be either of brass or cast iron.

All lead traps, bends and ferrules or stubs shall have at least 1/8 inch wall thickness. Lead traps and bends with 1/8 inch wall thickness usually bear the stamp “XH” and are known to the trade as extra heavy. Drum traps shall not be smaller than 4" x 8" lead drum traps with covers of cast brass threaded to make an air and gas tight installation.

(a) 
All gas pipes and fittings installed underground with less than 12" cover shall be of merchants galvanized steel pipe with beaded galvanized malleable fittings. When such pipes and fittings are installed in areas to be paved such as at filling stations, parking lots, etc., the pipe shall be of galvanized wrought iron with galvanized beaded malleable fittings.
(b) 
Black steel pipe and beaded malleable fittings may be used where the pipes are properly supported or suspended to the beams, ceiling, or floor joists.

Water heaters, American Standard approved requirements for gas water heaters, Z21.10-1945. Compliance with these specifications shall be determined by tests and examinations conducted by either the American Gas Association Testing Laboratories, the Underwriters’ Laboratories, Inc., and certified test results shall be furnished to the chief plumbing inspector when requested. The cost of necessary tests shall be provided by the manufacturer or his agent.
(11) 
Water closet tanks. Overflows on flush valves, or when integral with the tank, American Standard air gaps in plumbing system, ASA-A40.4-1942, and American Standard backflow preventers in plumbing systems, ASA-A40.6-1943.

All receptacles used for water closets, urinals or otherwise, for the disposal of human excreta, shall be constructed of materials impervious to moisture which will not corrode. All water closets and urinals shall be provided with water flushing rims constructed so as to flush the entire interior surface of the bowl.
