Pursuant to authority of the Second Class Township Code, P.L. 350, No. 60, Section 1601(e), as amended, the Township of Smithfield hereby adopts the following portions of the BOCA National Building Code/1996 of the Building Officials and Code Administrators International, Inc:
A. 
Chapter 3 — Use or Occupancy.
B. 
Chapter 9 — Fire Protection Systems.

This Section of the Code of Ordinances shall include “Chapter 9” of the BOCA National Building Code, entitled “Fire Protection Systems,” except for amendments, deletions and substitutions as set forth herein. The provisions of Chapter 9 shall specify where fire protection systems are required and shall apply to the design, installation, maintenance and operation of all fire protection systems in all buildings and structures.

The model code portions listed above, including (where appropriate) all subsequent revisions and amendments thereto, may be known and cited as the “Fire Protection Subcode.”
A. 
The following Chapters, Articles or Sections are amended as follows:
(1) 
Section 903.1 is amended to delete the word “Department” in the fourth line and substitute, in lieu thereof, “Township Zoning Officer, Township Engineer or agency appointed or hired by Township.”
(2) 
Section 904.9 - Exception: is amended to delete the quantity “12” in the third line and substitute, in lieu thereof, “4.”
(3) 
Section 920.3.2 is amended to add, in the first line, after “R-2 and R-3” the following, “and R-4.”
(4) 
Section 918.4 - Where required: Should be amended to include the following subsections.
(a) 
918.4.5 Use Group B. An automatic fire detection system, installed in accordance with the provisions of this code and NFPA 73E listed in Appendix A, shall be installed and maintained in all building of Use Group B.
1) 
918.4.5.1 Under 12,000 Square Feet. If the total area of the building (not “tabular” or “building area”) is under 8,000 square feet, then the automatic fire detection system shall be monitored by a digital communicator, which shall notify the fire department dispatching center.
2) 
918.4.5.2 Over 12,000 Square Feet. If the total floor area of the building (not “tabular” or “building area”) is 8,000 square feet or more, then the system installed shall have an annunciator panel near the primary entrance and be zoned according to the configuration of the building. The system shall be monitored by a digital communicator, which shall notify the fire department dispatching center.
