The Smithfield Township Supervisors find that the failure to
keep open lanes of travel for use by fire, police and emergency apparatus
constitutes a potential hazard and a threat to the citizens of the
Township and to other individuals entering the Township. In order
to protect the health, welfare and safety of the citizens of Smithfield
Township and others entering the Township, the Supervisors of the
Township of Smithfield find that it is necessary to designate public
or private fire lanes as deemed necessary for the efficient and effective
use of emergency vehicles, apparatus and equipment.

Fire lanes shall be marked with yellow paint so that the paint
is plainly visible by pedestrians and motorists. The preferred method
of marking a fire lane shall be with the border and cross-hatching
at 45º angles to the border. Such cross-hatching shall be no
less than five feet in width, measured from the curb or border which
shall be painted a solid color, the same as the cross-hatching. Signs
identifying fire lanes shall be spaced not more than 30 feet apart
and be placed in such a fashion that the same are clearly and plainly
visible to all motorists and pedestrians within the fire lane. All
painting plans and signs must be approved by the Smithfield Township
Supervisors, or by the Zoning Officer, prior to the painting and/or
installation of said fire lane Signs.

All signage required by this Part shall state than no standing,
stopping or parking is permitted in the fire lane. Said signage shall
be of a size and contain lettering so as to be immediately visible
to all pedestrians and motorists within the fire lane. Prior to the
erection of such signage, such signage shall be approved by the Township
Supervisors or the Zoning Officer. All signage required under this
Part shall be double faced.

All designated fire lane signs or markings shall be maintained,
by the property owner, in a clean and legible condition at all times
and replaced, repaired or repainted when necessary to ensure adequate
visibility. Fire lanes shall be maintained free of snow, ice, debris
or any other obstruction or hazardous condition. The penalty for violation
of this Section shall be $200, as amended by resolution of Smithfield
Township Supervisors from time to time, and/or removal of the obstruction
at the expense of the property owner, per violation.

Vehicles and equipment are not permitted to stop, stand or park
in designated fire lanes. No obstruction shall be permitted in or
around designated fire lanes. The penalty for violation of this Section
shall be $50, as amended by resolution of Smithfield Township Supervisors
from time to time, and/or removal or towing at the expense of the
property owner and/or the owner of the vehicle or equipment.

Violations of this Part shall be enforced by either the Zoning
Officer, Fire Chief, Fire Company Officer in Charge or Smithfield
Township Supervisors.
