The chief of police is authorized and empowered to sell at public auction to the highest bidder for cash, or to transfer such property to the city purchasing officer for sale to the public at public auction, any article of personal property in his possession unclaimed for a period of three months.

In the event the chief of police elects to sell such property, he shall give notice of the date and place of sale at least five days before the time fixed therefor by publication once in a newspaper of general circulation published in the county.

In the event the chief of police elects to transfer such property to the city purchasing officer for sale to the public at public auction, the city purchasing officer shall give notice of the time and place of sale in the same manner as provided in Section 2.48.020.

The net proceeds from any such sale shall be paid to the city treasurer and credited by the treasurer to the general fund.

If unclaimed property which has been transferred to the purchasing officer is determined by such purchasing officer to be needed for a public use, such property may be converted to such public use by the city.

Any property coming into the possession of the chief of police which is determined to be dangerous or perishable may be disposed of immediately, without notice, in such a manner as the chief of police determines to be in the public interest.
