(a)
Purpose.
This section is enacted so that the city council may promote efficient administration in the governance of the city in compliance with the authority granted to type B general law municipalities by the legislature of the state.
(b)
Two-year terms.
The regular term of office for the positions of mayor and members of the city council shall be two (2) years.
(c)
Staggered terms.
The terms of office of the mayor and city council shall be staggered so that the mayor and two (2) members of the city council shall be elected in even-numbered years and three (3) members of the city council shall be elected in odd-numbered years.
(d)
Continuance of council terms.
The offices of the mayor and two councilmembers with terms that currently expire in even-numbered years shall continue with elections in even-numbered years. Provided however, that the third councilmember office which corresponds with the resigning councilmember, currently has a term that expires in 2024, and this councilmember office shall instead expire on November 7, 2023, per the resignation. Thereafter, this councilmember office shall be considered for two-year terms at elections that expire in odd-numbered years. The remaining councilmember positions with terms that expire in odd-numbered years shall continue with elections in odd-numbered years.
(e)
Mayor and councilmember terms of office.
Beginning with the election on November 7, 2023, three councilmember positions shall be considered for two-year terms and thereafter every two (2) years, and beginning with the election on November 5, 2024, the Mayor's office and two councilmember positions shall be considered for (2) year terms and thereafter every two years.
