A. 
The county surveyor shall be a person authorized to practice land surveying in California and shall be appointed and may be removed by a majority of the board of supervisors, and shall serve at the pleasure of the board of supervisors.
B. 
The county surveyor may be:
1. 
The director of public works; or
2. 
A qualified county employee recommended by the director of public works, who shall be an employee of the public works department, and whose operations, functions and work product, with the exception of those activities defined in Section 8726 of the Business and Professions Code, shall be supervised by the director of public works; or
3. 
A contract land surveyor recommended by the director of public works, who shall report to the director of public works.
C. 
The county surveyor shall have those duties as set forth in Chapter 11 of Part 3, Division 1 (commencing with Section 27550) of the Government Code.

If the person appointed surveyor of the county is a registered civil engineer of the state, he or she shall perform civil engineering work as may be directed by the board of supervisors and authorized by Section 27562 of the Government Code. In the performance of such civil engineering duties, the surveyor may be designated as and may use the title "county engineer and surveyor."
