Any firefighter or police officer injured while aiding persons or animals in danger or distress, regardless of whether on duty or off duty at the time of rendering such aid, shall be deemed to be injured in the course and scope of employment and, accordingly, shall receive such workers' compensation insurance benefits as may be provided by law.
