[HISTORY: Adopted by the Town of Harwinton 10-27-1952 by Ord. No. 6. Amendments noted where applicable.]
Resolved that the Town of Harwinton adopt the provisions of Chapter 43, General Statutes of Connecticut 1949,[1] relating to zoning and that a Zoning Commission be established for the Town which Commission shall exercise such powers in the Town as are granted by said provisions, and that such Commission shall be known as the "Harwinton Planning and Zoning Commission."

At the next election for Town officers in the Town of Harwinton there shall be elected five members of the Zoning Commission for the Town, one to serve for the term of one year, one for the term of two years, one for the term of three years, and one for the term of five years, all of said terms to begin on the date of election. At said election there shall also be elected one member to serve for the term of five years to begin one year from the date of said election. At each subsequent biennial election there shall be elected one member of the Zoning Commission for the term of five years, said term to begin one year from the date of election.

Within 30 days after the effective date of this section, the Selectmen shall appoint three alternate members of the Zoning Commission who shall hold office until the next biennial election or until their successors shall have been elected and qualified. At the next biennial election and at each biennial election thereafter three alternate members of the Zoning Commission shall be elected to hold office until the next succeeding biennial election or until their successors shall have been elected and qualified.

Unless otherwise provided by the General Statutes, any vacancies on the Zoning Commission, from whatever cause occurring, shall be filled for the balance of the remaining term by a majority vote of the then remaining members of the Zoning Commission present at a special meeting called for that purpose. If the remaining members of the Zoning Commission fail to act within 30 days, then the Board of Selectmen shall be empowered to fill said vacancy.
At the next election for Town officers in the Town of Harwinton there shall be elected five members of the Zoning Board of Appeals for the Town, one to serve for the term of one year, one for the term of two years, one for the term of three years, one for the term of four years, and one for the term of five years, all of said terms to begin on the date of election. At said election there shall also be elected one member to serve for the term of five years to begin one year from the date of said election. At each subsequent biennial election there shall be elected one member of the Zoning Board of Appeals for the term of five years, said term to be from the date of his election, and one member of the Zoning Board of Appeals for the term of five years, said term to begin one year from the date of his election.

At the next election for Town officers in the Town of Harwinton there shall be elected three alternate members of the Zoning Board of Appeals referred to as "the panel of alternates" under the provisions of § 8-5 of the Connecticut General Statutes. One of said alternate members shall be elected to serve for a term of three years, one for a term of four years, and one for a term of five years, all of said terms to begin on the date of their election. At each subsequent biennial election there shall be elected for terms of five years alternate members of the Zoning Board of Appeals to fill the offices of the alternate members whose terms are expiring or will expire before the next biennial Town election. The Selectmen shall appoint three alternate members of said Board to serve until the first election herein provided for.
