(a)
Job summary.
Appointed by the recommendation of the mayor and approval by city council and under the general direction of the city administrator, to provide quality library and information services, professional reference, and reader's advisory services to library users. Responsible for annual budget of library, completion of grants for funding and for technological upgrades. Also responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing library services and programs for children and adults. Performs other duties as required.
(b)
Organizational relationships.
(1)
Supervised by: City administrator.
(2)
Other: Librarian/library director must work a minimum of 20 hours per week and obtain 10 hours of continuing education yearly. Works closely with the mayor, city council, and all city department heads, numerous vendors, state and federal agencies, and with the general public.
(c)
Essential duties.
(1)
Performs a variety of routine tasks related to the acquisition or cataloging of library materials; assists in the processing and maintenance of library materials; and provides assistance at public desks within the library.
(2)
Completes annual budget and submits to council in timely manner; works closely with city administrator, mayor and council to ensure all goals are met; submits monthly reports and attends monthly council meetings.
(3)
Supervises library employees, creates work schedules, tracks vacation and sick time accurately, runs day to day operations of the library.
(4)
Assists in maintaining and developing assigned library collections; removes outdated and unused materials; catalogs and classifies books; and affixes identification labels to materials.
(5)
Participates in the evaluation of library materials; recommends purchase of new materials; analyzes procedures used to collect new library materials; and recommends modifications to improve library collections.
(6)
Participates in the preparation and maintenance of displays; and assists with seasonal and on-going programs and activities, including but not limited to story times and volunteer programs.
(7)
Responds to patron in-person and telephone requests for library materials, services and information; and assists patrons in completing requests for material not available in the local collection.
(8)
Participates in the promotion of library services and materials; assists in giving library tours to groups; and assists in the preparation of informational handouts for public distribution, including calendars and flyers.
(9)
Schedules trainings for all employees yearly with latest technological advances, assists patrons in learning latest technology.
(10)
Performs other duties as required.
(d)
Physical capabilities.
Sits for extended periods of time typing, filing, or inputting data on personal computer; safely lifts, holds and carries up to 30 pounds of computer paper or office supplies; reads difficult source documents and computer screens.
(e)
Required education, degrees, certificates, and/or license.
High school diploma or equivalent, prefer associates or bachelor's degree in suitable field or equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Must possess a valid state driver's license.
(f)
Experience, training, knowledge, and skills.
Strong service orientation with a positive attitude, treating all patrons with kindness and respect; ability to work independently; listens effectively and communicates concise, tactful, respectful manner both orally and in writing; comprehensive knowledge of current practices in public libraries, including reference services; technologically savvy and up to date on troubleshooting minor technological issues; ability to handle customer complaints and issues appropriately.
