The position of city attorney is hereby created and established. The city attorney shall be appointed by the mayor, subject to confirmation by a majority vote of the members of the city council and approval of the city attorney's employment agreement. The person appointed as city attorney shall be a citizen of the United States of America and of the state of Washington, and be an attorney admitted to practice law before the courts of record of the state of Washington.

The city attorney shall advise the city authorities and officials in all legal matters pertaining to the business of the city and shall approve all ordinances and resolutions as to form. He/she shall represent the city in all actions brought by or against the city or against city officials in their official capacity. He/she shall perform such other duties as the city council may direct.

The city attorney shall receive as compensation for his/her services an amount as established within an employment agreement or a contract for legal services executed between the city and the city attorney.

The city attorney shall have the authority to hire an assistant city attorney, who shall be approved by the mayor. An assistant city attorney shall receive as compensation for services the amount established by the city council in the annual budget.
